Germans pioneered military paradrops in 1940-41, using Ju-52 planes for operations in Norway, Holland, Belgium & Crete, building on early Soviet concepts.

Although taking the lead from early Soviet experiments with paratroops, it was the German Luftwaffe who first employed paratroops and glider borne troops in 1940. From the para-drops in Norway and Holland, the glider landings in Belgium, to the climax of German airborne operations with the assault on Crete in May 1941, the Ju-52 was the transport work horse of the German Armed Forces.
