Nada, a beautiful French journalist on assignment in New York, records the life and work of an up and coming punk rock star.
A raw artifact of the New York punk scene's chaotic zenith, Blank Generation (1980) is a cinematic time capsule drenched in downtown grit. Directed by German underground filmmaker Ulli Lommel, the film stars punk icon Richard Hell as Billy, a rising star on the local music circuit, and Carole Bouquet as Nada, a French journalist chronicling his unpredictable life. As her assignment grows more personal, Nada becomes entangled in Billy's volatile lifestyle, torn between her romantic connection to him and the steady life promised by her distant lover--who happens to be chasing down none other than Andy Warhol.
Fueled by Richard Hell's electric screen presence and an era-defining soundtrack performed by Hell and his band the Voidoids, Blank Generation embodies the spontaneous, DIY spirit of punk. Scenes unfold in crumbling lofts, graffiti-covered alleys, and shadowy clubs, capturing a city teetering on the edge of artistic explosion and cultural collapse. Lommel's loose, unfiltered narrative makes the film as much about the texture of New York in the early '80s as it is about the characters.
This Blu-ray edition from Dark Force Entertainment features a brand new 2K HD scan from the only surviving 35mm film elements. With additional score by future Oscar-winner Elliot Goldenthal and appearances from Ulli Lommel and Andy Warhol himself, Blank Generation is more than a film--it's a bruised and brilliant love letter to punk, art, and New York City's unvarnished past.
